upGrad Campus (formerly Impartus), which was acquired by Ronnie Screwvala’s upGradin 2021 for Rs 150 crore, has reportedly laid off about 30 per cent of its workforce.
According to a media reports, at least 120 of the 300 employees of upGrad Campus, a video-learning solutions provider, were laid off.
Impartus was incorporated into upGrad and rebranded as ‘upGrad Campus’ following the acquisition. It was aimed at higher education institutions as well as college students.
upGrad Campus is the company’s second subsidiary to lay off workers in the last several months. Harappa Education, which was acquired by the edtech unicorn last July for Rs 300 crore, recently lay off approximately 60 people, or 30 per cent of its 200-person workforce.
This move also comes at a time when edtech unicorns are experiencing losses, laying off personnel, halting expansion plans, and attempting to conserve funds in the face of a fundraising winter.
Since its founding, upGrad has acquired 14 firms in several verticals, including upskilling and reskilling programmes, test prep, college student courses, the study abroad segment, and short skilling courses.
Last December, however, the acquisition of Exampur, an online learning startup for competitive tests, fell through.
In November, upGrad announced plans to consolidate all of its mergers and acquisitions in India into One upGrad, with the integration process expected to be completed by March-June 2023.
