Zume, a one-time robot pizza business that raised millions of USD, has shut down operations, according to media reports.
It bagged about USD 450 million from SoftBank Group's Vision Fund and others. It has retained Sherwood Partners, a restructuring firm, to assist it in shutting down.
The firm, founded in 2015, was one of many attempting to employ robots to create pizza. The notion never took on, and the system encountered technical difficulties, such as keeping melted cheese from sliding off while the pizzas baked in moving vehicles.
Based on the know-how of a southern California company it had bought, Pivot Packaging, the company reduced more than half its staff and transitioned to compostable packaging in January 2020.
