Indian YouTubers generated an economic value of INR 6,800 Cr while supporting over 683,000 jobs

Indian YouTubers have contributed more than INR 6,800 Cr to the Indian economy in 2020, with YouTube supporting 6,83,900 jobs across the country during the same period, a report published by Oxford Economics.
Since its launch, YouTube India has seen many YouTubers posting content on the video-sharing platform. Those numbers have been steadily increasing, with more and more content creators making their YouTube appearances a full-time career.
With thousands of success stories on the platform, YouTubers is fast becoming a lucrative career choice for many people in the country, content creators or otherwise.
The report found that the primary source of economic impact is the revenue YouTubers generate from the site. This can include ad sales, payouts from eight alternative monetization features such as channel memberships, Super Chat, and royalties paid to music and media companies.
Aside from the revenue, YouTube also enables creators to attract a wider audience and build a global reach. This, in turn, opens up revenue opportunities for creators through brand collaborations, live performances, sponsorships, and more.
The indirect impact on the Indian economy comes from the consumption of goods and services these YouTubers indulge in. This favours the consumer economy and keeps the wheel of growth chugging along.
The report also pointed to a plethora of positive impacts from YouTube in various aspects of the country’s economy, such as B. helping SMEs to acquire new customers, helping students to access additional sources and helping Indian content creators to reach a global audience.
Oxford Economics reported that 90 per cent of SMBs said YouTube has helped them grow their customer base, while 88% of SMBs using YouTube believe that easy access to information on YouTube makes their employees more productive.
Currently, the number of Indian YouTubers with more than 100,000 subscribers stands at around 40,000, a 45% year-on-year increase from 2020 to 2021. In addition, more than 4,000 channels have over 1 million subscribers, an increase of over 50 per cent year-on-year, as of June 2021.
