Employees from government ministries, departments, agencies, and public sector units (PSUs) will soon be allowed to hire taxis from cab aggregator Uber for official purposes, thanks to a partnership between the company and the public procurement web GeM (government e-marketplace).

The service would be provided at a fixed price with no cancellation fee and no surge pricing. The company has registered on the GeM site, which was developed in 2016 by the commerce ministry enabling central ministries and departments to purchase goods and services in order to increase openness in government procurement.

The officials will ride cashless/cardless; more vehicle types for government riders have been added—GeM Yatraa Hatch and GeM Yatraa Sedan. There will also be an hourly rental fee for additional stops.
