With festival sales winding down we take a look at how online shopping has experienced remarkable growth during this season. The market has rocketed. And needless to say, the market outdid itself this festive season. The biggies like Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal, hadn't left any stone unturned to entice the customers. There was a remarkable rate of 40 per cent growth in the ecommerce market this year.

A survey done by Shop Pirate Coupons provides some interesting insight and striking data. Electronics had the highest demand while fashion was shown to contribute a significant share in the boom of ecommerce. The coupon company also reports that gift cards went viral too, as most online stores lured customers with exclusive and customized gift cards.

Here are 14 big takeaways from ecommerce behaviour this Diwali season 2016

1. The total festive consumer spend on ecommerce site has increased year on year since 2014. In 2014 it was approximately rupees 10,000 crores; in 2015, it was 20,000 crores and this year it was 25,000 crores.

2. That’s an increase in sales of three times over since 2014. Main reason are most likely better internet connectivity in tier one and tier two cities, a spike in mobile traffic, and of course more and more discounting.

3. The biggies, that is Amazon, Flipkart and Snapdeal saw a combined 40 per cent increase in sales over last year. Flipkart showed the biggest improvement, Amazon came in second.

4. Amazon registered approximately 38 orders per second.
Flipkart registered approximately 30 orders per second.
Snapdeal registered approximately 180 orders per second.

5. Total sales value for Flipkart during the season is estimated to be in the range of 3000 to 3300 crores, for Amazon 2000 to 2200 crores, and for Snapdeal it’s predicted to have been in the range of 1700 to 1800 crores.

6. Amazon showed one lakh orders in 30 minutes. Flipkart showed five lakh orders in one hour and Snapdeal showed 11 lakh orders in 16 hours.

7. Popular categories with the most sales were mobiles, electronics, clothing and home related products.

8. The top selling electronics were the LeEco Le2, Samsung J2 and Xiaomi Redmi Note3

9. One flash sale saw 248,000 pen drives priced at 199 rupees sold in two hours.

10. 70 per cent of revenue from online fashion sales went to Flipkart, Myntra and Jabong.

11. 54 per cent of customers accessed the ecomm sites via mobile and 46 per cent via traditional desktop/PC.

12. Approximately 75 per cent of shoppers were male and 25 per cent female.

13. Amazon had one of the highest number of sellers on its site at 90,000 while Flipkart had 85,000.
