Brainly is a doubt-solving platform, with a Knowledge Base spanning all grades, levels, and subjects. It is used by over 5.5 crore students, parents, and educators in India. Students and parents use Brainly to interact with experienced teachers and peers to help them better understand ideas ranging from Math to Physics, History, English, and beyond. It has India’s largest community of students and tutors who can answer questions asked by students on its Q & A platform, with a Knowledge Base of over 48 million questions and answers.

Our app and website can be accessed in over 35 countries across the world. The company is headquartered in Kraków, Poland, and has offices in Bangalore, New York City, and Barcelona.

At Brainly, we envision personalized learning for every student. We have a “freemium” business model – extensive India-specific content encompassing thousands of state board and NCERT books, textbooks and exam preparation questions/answers, video-based tutorials, etc., which are offered free to students.

What are the unique key points (USP) of your company?

The platform effectively functions as an online version of a real-life study group to assist students in resolving their studies-related problems. Students can get answers from Brainly in a variety of subjects, boards, and pedagogies. It promotes self-directed learning with unrivaled convenience. The platform aims to make education more fascinating, enjoyable, and interactive by helping students learn faster by instantaneously clearing their doubts.

What challenges are you facing in running your business?

Despite the huge opportunities, one of the biggest challenges is standing out in the highly competitive ed-tech space. However, with our large user base, we are sure that we bring value to our users, which helps us improve the brand’s stickiness. Another big challenge is retention rates in the ed-tech industry. Engaging with students means focusing on making learning enjoyable. To that end, gamification has seen massive adoption across the sector. With our gamification strategy, we can sustain our retention rates and increase engagement among students. Linking outcomes to rewards, introducing characters and stories to explain concepts, and providing different learning formats are some of the key components that improve student engagement and ensure better outcomes.

How has been your customer's response so far post lockdown?

During the period of remote learning, businesses were compelled to adopt digital technology and innovative ways to reach out and engage with their audiences. The Edtech industry revolutionalized the education sector, and both parents and students got accustomed to online learning. Post pandemic, as students return to offline classrooms, we do see a decline in time spent online for educational resources, but the online learning business continues to grow and is here to stay. Brainly’s subscription business continues to grow globally. A lot of teachers who lost their jobs are slowly returning to work, and Brainly has been instrumental in employing these teachers on a full-time as well as freelance basis.

How do you look at expansion?

India is a key focus for Brainly. We will be looking at expanding not only our teacher and student base but also our team in India. We want to grow our tutor base by 10x in the next 12 months as a result of business expansion. Brainly has a wide variety of subjects covering core sciences, math, languages, etc. that will be taught by Brainly Teachers. We are committed to our mission of becoming the most used platform for teachers and students in India in the next four-five years.

What has been the biggest learning so far?

During this time, despite the impressive growth, we learned that ed-tech platforms still have a lot to cover in the Indian market and language is the key to opening it. While English is and will remain critical for learning, there is a huge demand for learning in the regional languages, at Brainly we are working on addressing this demand and helping bridge the gap.

What are your plans, concerning the Indian Market?

Brainly’s Knowledge Base is already available in Hindi, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Gujarati, Kannada, Bengali, and Sanskrit. We are actively working on expanding our Indian language offerings. To offer more personalized and real-time learning assistance to students and parents, we plan to expand our products and services beyond homework and exam preparation help.

We are growing our tutor base by 10x within the next 12 months. A wide variety of subjects covering core sciences, math, languages, etc. will be taught by Brainly Teachers. We remain committed to our mission of becoming the most used platform for teachers and students in India in the next 4-5 years.
