ZDream, known as Zhudao in China, dual based in Beijing and Gurgaon, has announced the launch of ZDream Labs on September 5th, 2017. It is the first Indo-China incubation lab, developed with a vision to discover, invest, hand-hold and nurture startup.
As ZDream runs the single largest tech media in China, with a sole focus on Indian market, it has the advantage not only to bring the best practices and executional expertise from peers of large Chinese Tech companies to India but also to connect the Chinese tech ecosystem with Indian tech ecosystem in many ways. The newly concocted lab will play the role of a launchpad for both the ecosystems to create sparks via mentoring and funding.
For mentoring, ZDream Labs has a dedicated Chinese research team working on all our incubated or invested projects. The research team would be analysing the counterparts of incubated team and keep them abreast of the latest know-hows. Besides, ZDream has on-boarded founders and top executives of many mid to large tech companies including unicorns in China.
For funding, apart from ZDream’s direct investment, it also connects Indian start-ups with Chinese investors through its regular "Chindia TMT Dialogue" Conference and “ZDream Demo Day" where start-ups present their business plans to a curated audience of Chinese as well as Indian investors.
“The mission of launching ZDream Labs is to find out the next unicorn startup from India. We aim to grab the opportunity in the Indian Internet market by utilizing Chinese resources and techniques,” said Li Jian, Founder and CEO of ZDream. He is also the Founder of Draphant, a Chinese consultancy firm based out of Gurgaon, which is the parent company of ZDream.
He added that after having witnessed how China has grown for the last 15 years, ZDream understands the life cycle of each business model. Unlike many investors who would bet on hot ideas from US and China, ZDream analysed the relevant infrastructures of certain business model to decipher whether it’s mature enough to support the business model. It helps ZDream in identifying the best business model in the current business world.
Jian also believes India and China share many synergies when it comes to startups in TMT (Technology, Media and telecom) space. Unlike US and the West, growth of Internet in both China and India is driven by mobile. Scale of mobile economy in China is far mature than India and learnings from there could be pivotal for Indian startups in mobility space.
Moreover, ZDream and its parent company Draphant, has made some investments in early stage start-ups through its own funds and its Chinese partners. The portfolio companies include Milkbasket, an on-demand micro-delivery platform, iamwire; a media platform and digital media platform hotify. Last year, it acquired New Delhi-based start-up database Xeler8 for an undisclosed sum.
