Trell, A Video-first Experience Discovery Platform, Raises $1.25M from BEENEXT, Rajan Anandan & Others

The funds will be used to expand and strengthen the team in the areas of product, technology and data science.

Bengaluru-based an experience discovery platform through user-generated short videos, Trell has raised seed round of $1.25Mn co-led by BEENEXT and  WEH Ventures. Sprout Venture Partners, Google India MD Rajan Anandan, Founder Anupam Mittal  & other HNIs also participated in the round through LetsVenture platform.

The startup also saw participation from existing angels Aprameya Radhakrishna (Founder, TaxiForSure), Nirav Choksi (CEO, Credable), Shanti Mohan (CEO, LetsVenture), Nitin Gupta (CEO, Ola Money and Founder, PayU India), Amit Lakhotia (VP - Business, Tokopedia) & others; from whom they had raised $250K last year.

The funds will be used to expand and strengthen the team in the areas of product, technology and data science.

Launched in August 2017, Trell is an experience discovery platform designed specifically for millennials, it is powered by user-generated short-form video content. It has already crossed half a million downloads and has over 200K monthly actives, in 8 months of its product launch. It was started by a team of IIT Bombay alumni Pulkit Agrawal, Prashant Sachan, Arun Lodhi & NITIE alumnus Bimal Kartheek Rebba, who have previously worked with Qualcomm, Microsoft, Samsung and ITC.

Currently, Trell’s users are creating over 10K original posts every day, and it is growing 1.5X month-on-month since September 2017. Trell will potentially serve as a alternative profession to the creator community, similar to Youtube over the period of time.

Trell is accessible on Android, iOS and Web, and within 8 months it has got more than 1 million high-quality user-generated content uploads with experiences ranging from exploring local street food stalls to european backpacking trips. The content on Trell is all visual, geo-tagged and has a storytelling element, which makes it contextual and immersive, and this differentiates it from all other competitors, the company says.

Addressable user-base in India around experience discovery is currently at ~230M users including non-english speaking audience which are growing at 18% CAGR. Trell aims to capture 10% of this untapped market by the end of 2019.

Founded in 2013, LetsVenture works with startups and investors on discovery, syndication and closure of funding rounds. There are 18000+ startups and 3000+ investors on the platform. In the last 4 years, their investor members have invested in 163 companies with a total of $66.8 million being raised. LetsVenture is backed by India’s most prominent investors like Accel, IDG Ventures, Nandan Nilekani (Founder, $30B Infosys), Rishad Premji ($35B Wipro), Ratan Tata (Chairman Emeritus of $100B Tata Group), Mohandas Pai, Karan Thakral (Singapore).

SoftBank- and Alibaba-backed digital payments and e-commerce firm Paytm is also in talks to acquire LetsVenture-backed hotel booking startup NightStay Travels Pvt. Ltd.
