The company aims at ensuring last mile deliverance of essential items to homebound citizens during Covid-19

Zomato, an online food aggregator based at Gurugram, has declared that it has started countrywide operations involving the delivery of groceries in select 80 cities as of now. Deepinder Goyal, CEO and Founder of the company, took to the company blog and said, “We have started grocery delivery in more than 80 cities across India to help with the supply of essentials. Our delivery network in the country is only second to India Post, and we are putting in every effort to make sure that we put it to good use to serve the community.”

Zomato aims at ensuring last-mile delivery of essential items to citizens during the lockdown due to Covid-19. A new feature called Zomato Market has been added in the Zomato App launched earlier. Meanwhile, the rival firm Swiggy has raised $43 million as part of its ongoing Series 1 round and has claimed that it would use the funds received to expand their business by investing in grocery delivery, concierge services and micro-delivery arm Supr Daily.

Rahul Bothra, Chief Financial Officer, Swiggy, said, “Our focus remains to execute on our vision while building a sustainable path to profitability.” The online food ordering and delivery market that was expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of over 45% to reach $11 billion in gross merchandise value (GMV) by 2023, according to Red Seer Consulting, a research and advisory firm, recently experienced a steep decline due to the ongoing corona pandemic. However Swiggy and Zomato has so far managed to stand tall with enhanced services realigning with the market. They are re-emerging in the delivery of essentials products.
