30,000 dental students graduate every year. Unlike other professional courses, there is no company or industry waiting to hire them. The college teaches them the technical aspects of dentistry but there is no curriculum on how to set up or manage a dental clinic. The cost of setting up a dental clinic is Rs. 12 to 15 lakhs and it’s a risk many are not willing to take. So most of them work for their seniors or their professors at salaries as low as Rs. 5000. A month. There have been cases where dental graduates have left their jobs to join a BPO, finding it more lucrative.

That’s not the only sad part. In India the state of the dental industry is appalling. In metro towns, the ration of a dentist to population is 1:20,000 and in rural areas it is 1: 300,000.

According to the WHO (World Health Organisation) a child must visit a dentist twice a year and an adult, once a year. Most people don’t visit a dentist due to lack of time, fear of pain, expensive dental visit and due to lack of awareness towards oral hygiene and preventive dental care.

So far MobiDent has raised a round of pre Series A funding from New York based DanGold Investment Corp, that is in January 2017. In March 2016 MobiDent was awarded the best startup idea by Royal Academy of Engineering London. Earlier in August 2016, MobiDent secured funding from IIM- Ahmedabad’s Centre for Innovation Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE).

MobiDent was started with an aim to create an organised industry for dentists for the benefit of the dentist graduates and for citizens with no access to comprehensive dental healthcare. In the next three years, MobiDent plans to hire 3000 dentists and train 1000 dental hygienists.

MobiDent is a Bengaluru based startup, started by Dr Devaiah, a dentist with over 20 years of experience, and Vivek Madappa, a serial entrepreneur. One of the startup’s compelling USPs is that they will send a dentist to you for affordable dental care in the comfort of your home Because let’s face it, even those us who can afford it don’t go to the dentist for fear of being prodded in a dentist office which always manages to look like a science laboratory.

MobiDent’s “dental clinic in a suitcase” is the first and one of its kind innovation that aims to make oral hygiene and preventive dental protection inexpensive and easily acessible. With a portable dental clinic and a portable chair of only 12 kilograms, the MobiDent kit can be carried and transported anywhere. By providing a dentist with a “portable dental clinic in a suitcase” MobiDent delivers dental care at their homes at times that are convenient to them and at significantly low costs.

MobiDent’s business model has been executed across three verticals – homes ; corporates and hospital chains. Over the last 24 months, Mobident has served 51,000 patients across more than 510 companies and has partnered with more than 20 hospitals across Bangalore, Mysore, Pune and Ahmedabad.

With 33 dentists currently on board, every MobiDent dentist goes through a structured world class training in soft skills and technical skills at the MobiDent Academy for Dental Excellence (M.A.D.E). Only the best who have treated over 2000 patients and performed over 2500 procedures are qualified to offer treatment at home.
