Bigbasket, Indian online supermarket with over 3 mn-registered customers, launched its 17th Collection Center (CC) in Manchar, Pune District in the presence of Honorable Sadabhau Khot, Minister of State for Agriculture and Horticulture, Marketing, Government of Maharashtra. This launch coincides with Bigbasket’s 5th year anniversary making it a landmark occasion for the company.

The new collection center will enhance market access to farmers from the Pune district through fair pricing by aggregating demand and will also provide them with necessary technological support by structuring payment gateways and logistics at the grassroots level.

Mr. Hari Menon, Co-founder and CEO, Bigbasket on this occasion said "Fruits & Vegetables (F&V) contributes to over 18% of our total business. It is therefore very essential that we ensure that farm fresh quality is extended to our customers at the best prices. We will be co-partnering with 3000+ farmers by the end of 2017, to significantly improve our range and freshness of the produce. Our customers will soon have 45+ options of farm fresh F&V to choose from. We are proud that the inauguration of one of our largest and state-of- the-art collection centers in Manchar marks the onset of our 5 year anniversary celebrations.”

By ensuring complete transparency in every step, we have created a platform for direct exchange of goods and information exchange between the farmer and the consumer. This will guarantee instant and profitable payout to farmers and also enable availability of safe, fresh, and best-quality harvest fruits and vegetables to consumers at competitive prices. This will be the second Collection Center in Maharashtra with the first being in Nashik, which has just started its operations. At the CC, the produce will be sorted /graded in the farmer’s presence, accurately weighed & accounted for at transparent & fair prices. Payment will be credited to the farmer’s bank account with 3 days of their submission of the produce. Trained agronomists from bigbasket will work very closely with farmers to help improve the quality of their yield.

Bigbasket has an online retail presence in 30 cities and services a customer base of over 50,000 on a daily basis. The F&V business at bigbasket has seen a 10 percent growth on a month-on-month basis. As part of its effective sourcing strategy, bigbasket sources 60% of the sales directly from farmers via the CC. By transforming the supply chain into a value chain, bigbasket has already brought 1200 farmers and 3000+ acres of cultivated land growing over 45 different varieties of fruits and vegetable under its umbrella. Direct sourcing has increased margins by 6-7% and farmer incomes by 10-15%.
