“If You’re Gonna Go Fast Go Alone And If You’re Gonna Go Far Carry Your Team Along,” Beerud Seth, Co-Founder & CEO, Gupshup

The entrepreneurial journey is a roller coaster, you can’t be depressed when things are going bad and vice versa (The highs are extremely high and the lows are the extremely low).

Since it’s Guru Parv Day, who is the most important guru in your life?

I would say, my professor DB Phatak at IIT Bombay is the most important guru in my life and the thing which I took away from him is that he is incredibly accomplished and yet Very humble and very hungry. He was very ambitious and always had that thought that his students an accomplish great things in life and he did that with an open growth mindset. I owe a lot of things to him honestly.

It’s also International men’s day, so what do you think, as a man what is the one big disadvantage?

Do men need men’s day? I think the disadvantage might be that people take things for granted, men sometimes get things a little easier. I think women have to go through a lot and the one’s that succeed are far more resilient and more capable and sometimes you need to go through certain hardships to accomplish that. And all these privileges that we take for granted I think that can backfire.

Can you do well in academics and be a great entrepreneur as well?

I was blessed with a good academic record. which sometimes can give you a false sense of confidence and disbelief that everything you do would you gonna do it well simply because you are smart and the real world doesn't work like that.

You have to be gritty, you have to be perseverant, face a lot of failures that are not in your control. It’s not like a little test environment where if you do well and you are told a syllabus and you get more marks you win. It’s not stimulation of real life.

Give us a sense of your journey to our reader, what was the success in the way and what was the failure in your way and what did you learn from the?

I grew up in Mumbai price in Borivali (northern part of Mumbai) and went to school down Bosco Borivali and ended up at IIT Bombay and then MIT Boston and since then I have been a serial entrepreneur.

Key learnings:

  • The entrepreneurial journey is a roller coaster, you can’t be depressed when things are going bad and vice versa ( The highs are extremely high and the lows are te extremely low.)

  • Sometimes traditional Academics are a huge disservice, if you get good grades then you succeed! And this generally does not happen in the real world.

  • Every day is a new day, your track record doesn't matter.

  • Teamwork is really important.
